So, YouTube just released their pride video for 2018, and it’s very disappointing. Every year, reading the comments on the year’s pride video makes me loose faith in humanity, just by seeing how disgusting some peoples’ attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people are.
However, this isn’t what’s wrong with this year’s video. Yes, these atrocious comments are still there, but this year the video itself is worrying. The whole theme of the video can pretty much be summed up as “We’re LGBTQ+ so we’re great.”. They’re trying to say that LGBTQ+ content creators aren’t special because they create quality content, like with everybody else; but instead the only thing that makes them special is the fact that they are LGBTQ+, and that they want everyone to treat them specially because of that.
This is completely the wrong message to be sending across. Not only does it fuel the abhorrent comments, but it simply isn’t true. Being bisexual myself, I am a part of multiple LGBTQ+ communities, and I can tell you that we don’t want special treatment. We don’t think that we’re better than anyone else. All that we want is for people to accept us for who we are, and treat us the same as everyone else.
However, this is not the message that this video conveys. It conveys the opposite. And that’s the problem with it. I honestly think it is going to end up doing more harm than good.
